prior commitments
In the season 2 finale of 'Brothers & Sisters', we witness a Gay wedding, a kiss between two ex-siblings and the revelation that while the Walkers do not have a half-sister, they might have a half-brother instead!

I think 'Brothers & Sisters' works because of its solid cast, and its incredibly funny family dynamics. I am however, quite sad that Rebecca is no longer a Walker. But I do like the fact that there are signs that the writers are going to work on a Justin/Rebecca relationship, because hell, these two are most certainly made for each other. Like Ross&Rachel, Derek&Meredith, Doug&Carole, Justin & Rebecca are on their way to become another of those fairy-tale couples on TV-dom. But I think they have great chemistry together, and really, by ruling out Rebecca as a non-Walker, it simply makes it all possible for them to be a real couple. They look good together, they have an amazing bond going on between them, it'll be a total waste of existing storyline if they do not get together.

And what's up with the existence of this Ryan guy, who could now end up as the youngest brother of the Walker clan? Its like the writers decided that Rebecca and Justin should really get together and laboured to remove the only obstacle preventing them from doing so: which is the ex-fact that they were half-siblings. And to remove this icky factor from the love equation, they just decided to introduce another guy that could be the real Walker half-sibling instead. Its like a endless cycle that becomes kinda old and stale after time. But then again, Rebecca and Justin are gonna get together so I suppose that more than makes up for the lack of realism in it.

In case you didn't know, I LOOOOOVVVEEE Rebecca! Emily Vancamp (the actress who plays Rebecca) is so stunningly beautiful, I fell in love with her when she was in 'Everwood'. SHE IS SO DARN BEAUTIFUL! Her long flowing hair, her amazing eyes, her cute nose, her startling smile! ARGH. But Justin's the funniest and most adorable guy of the Walker family clan and I heard rumours that Emily and Dave (the actor who plays Justin) are dating in real life, so I guess I'll live with them getting together.

Oh and yes, Kevin and Scotty got married. I can't stand Scotty, so needless to say, I think this is quite a sad point. Why did Kevin choose Scotty over Jason, I will never know. And Holly Harper is still the conniving bitch that she is, and now that she is the CEO/chairman of the newly merged Ohaj and Walker winery, we can foresee at least another season of business politicking and bitching. Let's hope she and Nora has another big food fight soon!

So here's the end of the American TV season. Here's to the return of the next season this fall! I can hardly wait!

can you hear me chuckling?
Another week has come and gone, and we make our way into the month of May. Its amazing how fast time flies.

Today was a good day. School was unbelievably short, with a single 2 hour tutorial scheduled at 0830 and time to clerk patients after, I was out of school at around 12 for a lunch session with the whole of the CG at Vivocity. And then I was back home at around 3. The earliest I've been home in ages.

The latest episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' was brilliant. I like the fact that the episodes are of better quality now. I think the Writers' strike was in a sense a good development because it gave the writers time to think and map out the remaining story lines in a proper, tight, coherent manner, so the post strike episodes are so far so darn good.
This week's episode had a guest appearance by Addison, and I think all the fans would agree with me on this, that we really miss her and this week's episode just highlighted just how much more interesting and funny the show would be if she were still around.
Addison's cool. I like the way she has established relationships with quite a number of the characters, relationships that are unique: there's the whole Mer-Der-Addy love triangle, the Addy-Sloan flirtation, the Alex-Addy sexual tension, the Izzie-Addy student/mentor thing, Addy-Callie girl pals vibe, Chief-Addy father/daughter bond and Addy-Bailey mutual respect feeling.
It really was extremely intelligent of the writers to bring her back and capitalize on these relationships that Addison has with these other characters. Smooth move.

'Brothers & Sisters' was also good this week. I like the fact that the show has some of the best lines ever, even better than 'Grey's'. I mean, 'Grey's' has some seriously funny lines, but 'Brothers & Sisters' has like funny lines ALL OVER! The show doesn't have a single moment where I'm not impressed with the stuff the writers come up with. And the actors' delivery of the lines in 'Brothers' is just fantastic. They deliver it in a spitfire fashion that's so quick and smooth I'm amazed that its not all real. Solid acting by a solid cast.

Leaving the world of television behind, I am happy because other people are unlucky and ended up in their own private mess or nightmare. Okay, so I'm a mean mean person who builds his happiness on others' misfortune. But hey, its schadenfreude! Such things happen all the time, and we really just can't help it. At least I'm honest enough to admit it. Hehe.

Oh and I'll like to announce that there will be a drastic decrease in the quality & quantity of posts over the next few weeks (probably even years). As I start to get use to the regularity of clinical life, I'm getting less inspiration to blog. Heck, I don't even bother to proof read my entries anymore, so I'm not surprised if the entries these days are filled with grammatical and spelling errors! So I'll be very happy if I can squeeze out up to 3 entries of substantial quality per week. So really, don't waste too much time here. Not like you have been getting much from here before anyway!

the pillars of medicine
Thank god for the end of the writers' strike. Today, I spent the afternoon watching the first new episodes of the dramas 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Brothers & Sisters' to be produced in months. And I've got to say, the producers of these series are back in a vengeance. The quality of this week's episodes are some of the best seen this season, especially so for 'Grey's'. This week's episode was just a right dose of humour and drama, and sorta correlates with what we, as medical students, are currently going through right now. I loved it.

"The 4 pillars of medicine are anatomy, physiology, pathology and the art of conning patients" - Anon

And speaking of what we are going through right now, the second week of CSFC has finally come to an end, and we end it off with the release of the results of our year 2 finals. So I'm officially a M3 student now! (Sigh!) I must admit I was very disillusioned with what I was doing when I was shadowing some big shot Orthopaedics surgeon in clinics yesterday. Just seeing the way he treats his patients made me feel like whatever we are doing now is of absolutely NO use at all.
All those stuff about communicating with the patient, of feeling empathy with patients, of treating them as respectable human beings, really seem like crap taught to us to ensure that the faculty gets its butt covered when members of the public complain about the crudeness of the doctors being produced by the local University.

I guess each and everyone of us medical students has to start thinking about what kind of doctor you want to end up being. What kind of doctor are you really determined to be? You see all those really good doctors in television programmes, who are compassionate, yet professional at the same time, and you keep telling yourself that you really want to end up like them. But the truth is, that kind of person only exists in television programmes. Doctors in the real world rarely come in that perfect sort of balance. They are either too professional, or too compassionate, with absolutely no in betweens.

Everyday in CSFC, I question the kind of doctor, the kind of person I want to be, because everyday in clinics, you see how other people act, you see how your mentors and tutors behave, you see how your peers and colleagues change, and you see the wide spectrum of patients present in society and its kinda hard not to be influenced and changed by all that you soak in.
There are times where I really want to try to be compassionate and nice to my patients, but there are also times where I tell myself that its much easier to be strictly professional and emotionless when dealing with them. To be involved or detached, where do you draw the line?

I met this nice little sweet old lady in the clinics. She was staying in my base ward and I regret not getting to know her earlier. I've been going back and forth to talk to her since Tuesday, and today, she got discharged. I was lucky to catch her while she was preparing to leave and coincidentally, I was leaving the hospital while she left it as well. She was a lovely patient, and the first in what is hopefully going to be a long list of favourite patients to come. I hope she'll keep her health at tip top condition, and I hope to never ever have to see her in the hospital again, but some part of me will miss her, and hopes to see her in a non hospital setting or something.

I have another three years to figure out what kind of doctor I want to be. Whatever it is, I hope not to be an overly lousy one.

i'm still in love with the walkers
I spent the day completing the whole the first season of 'Brothers and Sisters' and I'm absolutely glad I did. While 'Heroes' is about the tension and mystery of it all and 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Private Practice' are about the drama between doctors, patients and the whole notion of discovering human nature and the balance between the science and art of medicine, 'Brothers and Sisters' is about the importance of family. Coming from someone who loves my huge extended family, I totally dig that, and that's why I keep going back for more.
I found the following scenes from season 1 on Youtube. These are some of my favourite scenes are they are hilarious and its my pleasure to share them with you all!

Justin, the youngest of the Walker children (discounting Rebecca, their half sister, who by the way, I really really dig!) is a recovering drug addict. This happens to be one of his meet the family sessions at Rehab, and as usual, the Walkers show us how amusing it is to be part of such a neurotic family!

One of the funniest scene on television ever - its the day after Valentine's Day and almost everyone in the family got laid. Just look at the way news spreads from one sibling to another! As Sarah, the eldest daughter of the family so rightly states 'You are all SLUTS!'

The Walkers having a 'friendly' family competition with another family. Kevin, the gay lawyer of the family, is angry with his sister Kitty for setting him up with a disastrous date - hence the angry outbursts of 'die Kitty die!' and what-nots! And Tommy's attempts at acting as a dinosaur - hilarious!

Nora, the matriarch of the family, loves to throw food at people. (I wish my mother did that too. Haha.) Here she's throwing all kinds of food at Holly Harper, who happens to be the mistress of her dead husband William. I love the way her brother and three sons keep popping up here and there and then closing the door on them when they realize that its completely out of their hands. I love the line that Nora says when Holly starts to fight back 'Oh lettuce, lettuce. That's very scary! How very scary!'
Nothing beats a food fight to get two feuding women together eh?

I want a pool party with my family too! How cool is that?

I love the family! Especially, Nora, Kitty, Justin and Rebecca!
Nora, the over protective, all nurturing mother who reminds me so much of my own mother.
Sarah, the over achiever eldest sister, CEO of the family business and struggling to balance both career and family.
Kitty, the feisty, opinionated second born, the most outspoken Republican in the family, who works for the Republican Senator McCallister as his Communications director. Oh, and she happens to be his newly wedded wife!
Tommy, the down-to-earth oldest son, who runs the family business with Sarah and recently started on his own venture of running a vineyard and who struggles to deal with his new role as a father.
Kevin, the gay lawyer. Sarcastic, cynical and sometimes overly brutal, he struggles to deal with his own commitment issues and to find true love for himself.
Justin, the innocent baby of the family, a Afghanistan and Iraq War veteran who had to deal with addiction problems and post war traumas.
Rebecca, the black sheep of the family, the half sister who is the love child between William, the deceased patriarch and his mistress Holly.
They are so funny together! They make me happy!

I'm going to catch up on Season 2 right now!

the woes of driving
Its just day 1 of my first day as a full time driver and I have things to bitch about.

First things first - parking fees. I used to wonder why so many of my driver friends find parking so problematic, and why they find so many different ways to scrimp and save on parking fees. I used to wonder why, until today. PARKING FEES are equivalent to day light robbery! I spent almost 17 dollars on parking today - ATROCIOUS. Its so hard to get decent free parking these days. I am still mildly sore at losing my free, hard earned lot at Science this morning, and the high cost incurred for parking throughout the rest of the day did nothing to quell my annoyance at that.

Secondly, fuel costs. OMG, at two dollars per litre, petrol is now a literal pain in the ass. Petrol companies are now no different tobacco companies - evil blood sucking fiends who are just out to suck you dry. It hurts me to see the the fuel gauge dip by even the remotest amount each time I park at a (highly expensive) lot. Every drop, every single drop of fuel is MONEY, money burnt, never to be returned to the pocket. Whats more, it causes pollution, it harms the environment, and the smoke it produces causes us to develop cancer and turns our lungs black! If I were a Senator of the USA , I'll definitely campaign for finding alternative fuel - cheaper ones at that! THE WORLD HAS TO BE SAVED! And one day, I will save it!

On another note, I feel happy that I met up with Sebastian today and helped him with his application essay. I think we made good progress today. I hope his application goes smoothly, and that all the hard work we did today would pay off. Anyway, it was good stuff. I think I'll make a good communication director for some US politician or something - just like Kitty Walker from 'Brothers and Sisters'. Who knows? If the doctor thing doesn't work out, I could move to the US and like work as the communication director for some US Presidential candidate or something.

Alternatively, I could work for some gossip tabloid juicy magazine and aim to ruin the lives of others. That would totally work too!

the walkers are addictive

Song lyrics | Pictures Of You lyrics

Seriously! THIS HAS TO STOP! Its one more revision day prior to my last day of CAs and here I am hooked on 'Brothers & Sisters'! This is not good for me. Seriously. I can catch up after the CAs, hours and hours of television and funny funny funny lines and hilarious situations that make 'Brothers & Sisters' such wonderfully addictive TV! But not now, seriously, not now! I still have loads of stuff to study for Cancer.

Anyway, that's a nice song up there. 'Pictures of You' by The Last Goodnight. Plus its an official 'Brothers & Sisters' song, just take a look at the music video! The scenes fit with the music perfectly! Nice song to get happy to.

'Brothers & Sisters' is really nice because the Walkers are so damn funny! They get into highly hilarious, yet absolutely realistic situations. They seem to be perpetually bickering over the most silly and trivial things, which is really kinda how every huge loving family deals with their own issues and stuff. Now who wouldn't want that kind of chaos and closeness? I know I do!

canine lunaris
Update @ 2000hr:
There's 'Titanic' on TV right now! And I can't believe I actually contemplated watching the movie! Oh my! First 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', and now 'Titanic'! Old movies are haunting me!

I'm going to raid my brother's room for his Titanic movie soundtrack. Anyone cares to join me in a rousing chorus of "My Heart Will Go On"?

你以为爱就是被爱 你挥霍了我的崇拜
风筝有风海豚有海 我存在在我的存在

所以不再为爱而爱

- "崇拜", 梁静茹

I just thought the lyrics of this song were particularly good.
The Music Video is very thought provoking, though rather depressing. I'm a bit too lazy to find the link to put it up here, so I'm not going to do it. =)

Just some random thoughts:
1. I shouldn't have watched an episode of 'Brothers and Sisters' because I'm hooked on the series now. Which isn't good, because it means that I now have 4 television serials to follow.

2. With regards to 'Brothers and Sisters', I wished I had a huge family too. Having 4 younger siblings to bully and kick around wouldn't be so bad eh?

3. I wish I could shake off that feeling of intense exhaustion that creeps up on me everytime I start to read a set of notes.

4. I really really want my driving license badly.

5. I regret deciding not to go to the USA with my mom and brother in December, but am too proud to admit it.

6. I absolutely can't stand the idea of me having to stay in my uncle's empty HDB flat before my new house is ready. Call me pampered but I'm sorry, I just hate living in a HDB flat.

7. I want to sit down at the TCC and order my favourite Hazel Nut Frappe and just, chill.

8. I want an Ipod, a pair of good headphones, new speakers for my laptop, and a whole bunch of the latest CDs to listen to.

9. I want to fast forward to the as-of-yet-unannounced release date for Starcraft II and start playing the freaking game already.

10. I want to get good results without having to mug that hard. Hehe.

I feel like a dog trying to bite the moon. Grrrrrr.
