'why so serious?'
2 epic movies. If you don't catch either of them, you deserve to die!

I watched the movie '赤壁' with my family last night. It was a last minute thing, because I was really affected by whatever happened last night and desperately needed to do something completely unrelated to medicine and also desperate for a reason to get out of the house. I pitched the idea of watching the movie with my brother, who, being who he is, managed to get my parents to watch it with us as well. So the four of us went down to AMK hub, bought tickets for the earliest show possible (10.20 pm) and watched the movie. Thank god for the reason to stop thinking about stuff though.

'赤壁' is quite a good movie. I feel quite sad that I'm typing this review about it right after watching 'The Dark Knight' because, well, the latter is infinitely better so I don't think what I am going to type about the former right now is going to do justice to it either. While it isn't as perfect as 'The Dark Knight', '赤壁' is still a pretty good movie. It does have a few weakness, such as its overly long pacing, its many convoluted plots and subplots, and some really weird editing, but it soars in terms of its cinematography, its complexity, its breath taking battle scenes and its solid ensemble cast. The show boasts some of the finest stars in Asia, all of them playing characters who are legendary figures in Chinese literature. Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Chang Chen all of them were all pretty good in their respective roles. I was particularly surprised by Takeshi's ability to pull off his rather hippie portrayal of Zhuge Liang, I must say that its a very different take on the character and he makes him more eccentric and debonair than traditional portrayals of him. The movie is bloody, violent and epic in its making, but the ending really is a kill joy as it ends abruptly, forcing you to wake up to the reality that the conclusion of the whole story is only going to be shown on screen in January next year when the second part is released then.

While it is a fantastic show on its own right, '赤壁' cannot compare to the masterpiece that is 'The Dark Knight'.

This is arguably one of the best movies ever, and definitely the best sequel ever. One of the reasons why I found it so enjoyable was the fact that it is one of the darkest films in a long long time. Dark, sinister and psychotic, but all in an artful and intelligent way. The story was engaging, the pacing was exhilarating, the action jaw dropping and the acting... unbelievable. The cast of 'The Dark Knight' is one of the strongest ensemble cast ever and I'm so glad they replaced Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes. The cast is just... genius. Every single actor portrayed their character so realistically and stunningly human. Cristian Bale is once again superbly stoic and tormented as Batman; Michael Cain is endearing as Alfred; Morgan Freeman is all wise and witty as Lucius Fox; Maggie Gyllenhaal is so much stronger as Rachel; Gary Oldman is perfectly subtle as Commissioner Gordon and Aaron Eckhart superbly righteous then angsty as Harvey Dent/Two-face.

But the best praises and accolades should really be left for the late Heath Ledger who would surely be propel into the realms of legends with his amazing performance as the Joker. I found it very sad to watch the last scene with him in it... there was this scene where after the Batman managed to finally apprehend the Joker, the psychotic clown said something along the lines that the two of them would probably continue to battle each other for all eternity. It was a very ironic and haunting think to hear that line because we all know the reality of things and that this Joker will never be able to appear in any other Batman movie ever. There will never be a villain like Heath Ledger's Joker. He has brought the bar to an even higher level.

I'm sure we have all read reports on how great and amazing his performance was, how terrifying and sadistic and psychotic it was, and of course, all those talk about a posthumous Oscar. But you really have to watch it to witness first hand the genius of a performance the man had put it because no words can describe how he did it. He was terrifying, he was sadistic, he was psychotic, yes... he was all that, but he did it in a way that wasn't over the top. He did it in a way that was entirely realistic, and it made it startling clear that such crazy, evil, and monstrous men could really exist. There may one day be someone as maniacal as his Joker who would walk the streets of any great city in the world, terrifying and terrorizing the people into submission. Once again, this just strengthens my theory, that its so much more fun to be the villain than to be the hero. Which is the morality of the film really... how strong a person are you and how long can you keep your convictions without ever falling to the dark side?

"You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."

Heath Ledger's performance is reason enough to warrant a re-watch of this movie. Its going to be the last full performance that he will ever give and its a real pity because you really want to see this iconic take of an iconic character live on in feature sequels to come, but of course, that simply can't happen anymore. There are reports that its going to be difficult for Christopher Nolan to ever top this film with a third film in the event that he wants to create a trilogy, and I agree with those reports. Whoever the new villain is, the actor has amazingly big shoes to fill. He or she would be trying to live up to a performance that would continue to terrify the hearts and inspire the minds of many in the long years to come.

indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull

I've finally caught this film! Yes yes, I know I'm slow, but when this film was just released, school was still in and I had no mood to watch movies at all. Now that the holidays are here, it seems that I've been indulging in film after film. But seriously, I wanted to catch the 4th Indiana Jones movie and I'm glad I made the trip down today to go watch it. I've got to admit that the best thing that AMK hub has given me is a good, clean, new theatre that's close to home, unlike the dirty old creepy theatre at Sun plaza which I swear gives me the jitters.

Indiana Jones was an entertaining joyride of a movie. It was action packed of course, and there were loads of humour in it, though I guess only fans will be able to some of the humour present because it has lots of in-jokes from the first 3 films. I love the way they incorporated bits and pieces of the previous films in this movie! Like the Lost Ark in the warehouse, which was the titular artifact of the first ever Indiana Jones film! And the presence of Sean Connery as Jones' dad picture, which we all now, was a major character in the 3rd film. And Indy's fear of snakes, how he named himself after his dog (now mirrored by how Mutt names himself 'Mutt') etc. It was a subtle way of acknowledging the legend of the first four films and making the old fans happy. Plus it gives the movie a sense of continuity, which would otherwise have been lost seeing as to how the last Indiana Jones movie was made almost over 2 decades ago.

The acting was good. It had a good all rounded cast: Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, Cate Blanchett as KGB bitch Irina Spalko, Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood (who by the way, was Indy's girlfriend all the way back in the first film) and Shia Lebeouf as Mutt Williams, Indy's new sidekick. I especially liked the way Cate Blanchett acted as Irina, who was as feisty as any KGB bitch can be! I must say she looks utterly adorable when she runs; she looks like she is trying to incorporate ballet or something, just hilarious!

The movie had a nice feel to it as well. I think the way the colours were muted and slightly tainted was an extremely nice touch on Spielberg's part. It gave the film a dated look and feel and made it seem all the more nostalgic, perfect when you are dealing with a come back film that's set in the not so recent past. Apart from that, the tainting of the colours also gave the film a more dreamy quality, and made it feel like it was out of this world, which is so true, because the stuff you are seeing in the movie is really something you would probably never encounter in your real life. And the special effects were also great. Everything was really really convincing and realistic, especially those nasty ants! Wow they give me the creeps man!

The only thing that I have to gripe about is the ending of the film, which unfortunately, made me wonder roll my eyes countless times. It was as if I was watching something out of Starwars instead of Indiana Jones. Seriously. I hate such endings... because I'm very skeptical about such things happening. I know it may or may not be true, but still, until conclusive proof of such paranormal activities are found, I still think movies shouldn't attempt to conclude stories in such a way, UNLESS your story is a sci-fi story in the first place! I'm sorry, but personally, I don't see how History and Science Fiction can be mixed in the same concoction.

Indiana Jones 4 made me wish I hadn't been born in stuffy old Singapore but in England or America instead, then I wouldn't have to worry about becoming an archaeologist and not be able to earn a living. Sigh.

prince caspian

Fantasy has always been an important part of my inner world. I think its important to maintain a large part of your imaginative psyche, so that there's always some place that you can escape to when you are momentarily sick with the real world. Its not too good to live in fantasies, but every now and then, escape into your fantasies is always a welcome respite from the monotony of everyday life.

The Chronicles of Narnia is another historic, well loved fantasy epic that has been in existence for a long long time. Its well loved by many, and after the run away success of The Lord of the Rings movies, Hollywood came knocking on Narnia's door as well. The first film, 'The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe' tells the story of what is arguably the most famous volume of the Narnian Chronicles. This year, its direct sequel, 'Prince Caspian' finally makes it to be big screen, 3 years after the original movie graced movie screens around the world.

'Prince Caspian' is an improved version of the first movie. Its darker, more action packed, more smooth, more professional, less kiddish a movie. The four actors acting as the Penvensie children have grown up and honestly, their acting chops have also improved by leaps and bounds. I must say that the girl (Georgie Henley) who acts as Lucy has improved so much that she no longer looks like she has a mental defect, which was how she appeared to me throughout the original movie. The rest have matured quite well into their respective roles as well, and I especially like the fact that they felt different from how they were in the previous film. There's also a new addition to the young cast, but I felt though, that the guy acting as Prince Caspian, Ben Barnes, churned out a performance that was satisfactory, but extremely bland. His portrayal of Prince Caspian pales in comparison to the Penvensie children, and he really isn't as suave as I picture Caspian to be.

One thing I noticed in this film is the lack of amazing emotional gravitas and solid acting present in the first film, which was provided by Tilda Swinton who played the White Witch then. I miss her! I really do! The few minutes where she appeared in her brief cameo featured what was perhaps the best piece of acting in the whole movie. Tilda Swinton is an amazing actress, and her ability to bring amazing characters to life is similar to the chameleon like abilities of another amazing actress, Cate Blanchett. And I also miss Aslan. Liam Neeson provides Aslan with a voice that has amazing gravitas as well, and you really feel like he is literally portraying a character that has so much kingly charisma. When Aslan appears in the last few scenes of the movie, it feels like something magical has happened and it really invigorates the whole movie. The few scenes with Aslan and the White Witch are some of my favourites, and also some of the best in this movie, mainly because they have a sense of solidness that the young actors just don't have.

The special effects and costumes and creatures are still as amazing and fantastical as ever. The battle scenes, while nowhere as epic of those in The Lord of the Rings, are still enough to make a little boy drool and wish he was a Lord of Narnia and actually there to chop off a couple of Telmarine heads. The storyline is a classic story of growing up, a classic coming-of-age tale, of learning responsibility, of learning how to be a good leader, of learning the importance of faith. Watch it if you enjoy fantasy, because this film will achieve what all fantasy films should achieve, which is to transport you far away from reality.

Just that little break from reality needed.

its the holidays!
In a blink of an eye, a 7 week course has come and gone. Yup. The Clinical Skills Foundation Course is finally over. I guess we are supposed to come out of it feeling like we are indeed on the right path of becoming a good doctor, but unfortunately, today's OSCE assessment made me realise that I'm far from being a competent doctor, let alone a good one. Yup. I'm now feeling like I just came out of a tiring 7 weeks without learning anything at all.

Nonetheless, its the official end of M2, and the start of M3 beckons in just 3 weeks time. M2 has been a blur. All I remember about it was loads of tests and mugging, loads of inter-personal traumas, loads of tiring days and nights trying to settle things that shouldn't and didn't actually need settling. Life could have been better, but now that I've lived through one of the worse years in Medical school, I feel like life, has been splendidly okay. But then again, if you ask me if I feel more prepared to be a doctor after two years in medicine, I'll tell you that 'no, I do not feel more prepared to be a doctor.' I'm still in a total haze about what is right and wrong, what is expected and not expected of us, what is happening and what is not. Its still a long long way before any of us become someone confident enough to stand out there and BE a doctor. Its still a long way indeed.

Today was spent rotting outside. We watched a beautiful movie called 'Accuracy of Death', starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, in which he was a Shinigami tasked with the job of judging if a person gets to die now or not. It is a brilliant movie about the importance of life and death and makes you think about what the important things in life are. What is your purpose, and have you achieved it? I think its something we should all ponder before death comes to claim us.

And Takeshi Kaneshiro is really bloody delectable. I have no idea why the OG girls prefer Takuya Kimura over him. I think Takeshi is the Asian version of Johnny Depp, and he acts with a kind of nonchalance and flamboyance. He was surprisingly good in this film as the rather innocent and naive Shinigami, who has a strong liking for music and a complete misunderstanding about humans. He was funny when it mattered, and delightful morose when the occasion calls for some serious emo-ing. All in all, he acted really well and it was a marvelous performance.

It was a good movie, the first movie I've watched in ages. My kind of movie because it was thought provoking and rather deep. All in all, definitely a movie I'll recommend, but I suggest you don't watch it if you can't stand slow movies.

After that, it was long time spent slacking around, eating and just chatting. Its been ages since I had a good chat with anyone, let alone so many different people from the OG. I think we had a great time together, exploring so many interesting topics. The greatest surprise of the day was Darryl, who turned out to be a love guru of sorts. Highly, highly shocking. I think we got so high from the chatting that we sort of lost track of the time because we only left Junction 8 at 2330. But still, it was a good day well spent.

Tomorrow's the big day. I'm feeling slightly sianified over all the stuff I have to do and slightly pissed with myself for taking on this undertaking, seeing as to how I hate administrative stuff, but oh well. I have to just suck it up and just live through it and try to be happy about it. Afterall, tomorrow's supposed to be my day.

And yes, the conclusion I got from today is that I may have gotten so used to being single that I don't really want to look for a relationship anymore, and I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way. Yeah.

Quote of the day: 'What do you think about death?'

'and here we... go!'

I think this movie is going to be fantastic. Batman in all its morbid and dark glory. But yes, that's exactly what I like about the whole Batman universe: the fact that everything's so dark and awfully depressing.

I think its very spooky to see Heath Ledger in the trailer. Knowing that he's no longer with us and yet, seeing him as the diabolical maniac that is the Joker makes everything seem so... eerily creepy. And by the looks of it, his final swan song could just be his greatest role yet. Its not easy reprising a role so splendidly portrayed by Jack Nicholson more that twenty years ago and while you can still catch a glimpse of Nicholson-inspired-Joker in the trailer, it appears that Ledger managed to play the master criminal in his own rather subtly deranged manner. Yes, that's the difference: Nicholson's Joker was so darn over the top; Ledger's Joker appears to be more sinister and subtle, not so exuberant but still incredibly creepy.

Like I always say, villains get all the fun.

Drink up, me hearties, yo ho!

"Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly... stupid." - Captain Jack Sparrow

Captain Jack Sparrow is SO entertaining! And Johnny Depp really is the most talented actor to have ever lived. There are actors who are just men pretending to be someone else, and then, there are actors who are really actors, men who live the characters that they are portraying, men who communicate with the characters they are portraying, men who really breathe life into characters that were moments before, just merely words describing who they really were. Johnny Depp is one such actor, and actors of such caliber are really really hard to come by. Which is why he is my favourite character, because all the quirky characters he portrays NEVER FAILS TO AMAZE ME AND MAKE WANT TO PLAY THE CHARACTER AS WELL!

This man deserves at least 5 Oscars! SO START GIVING THEM TO HIM ALREADY!

where are all the tiles, dogs and dresses?
Last day of school ever before the year of the Rat arrives. I think I was sort of determined to really live it up today, but lots of exciting things happened - like me collecting my stethoscope and sphygmomanometer and tendon tappers. And it was Szejia's 21st Birthday celebration today. It was hilarious because we wanted to surprise her during her PBL lesson with a cake, but somehow, the liaising was screwed up and when the whole OG burst in the room, the PBL group looked at us as if we were crazy or something. Totally weird.

After that, a bunch of us went to Shihui's house to play a round of Mahjong, while waiting for the rest of the people to finish their respective PBLs. It was a most excruciating game for me because I was locked in an eternal struggle with Edwin, as we both tried to out-niao each other and outplay each other as well. In the end, I lost horribly. I was the biggest loser of the game, which was quite sad because I was the first winner. I swear I will get my revenge when we go visit Minjia's house on Sunday! Oh yes I am!

We waited for the rest of the folks to finish their lessons, and also played with Shihui's dogs Sparky and Wa-wa as well. I am so jealous of my friends who have pets. Its quite sad that my mom hates dogs and absolutely forbids me to keep one. I would love to have a dog, preferably a Labrador or Golden Retriever. I'll probably give him a real smart alecky name or something and make him chase people. Haha.

Then a bunch of us went of to meet Szejia and Yinxia to have dinner and watch a movie. I had a really good bowl of japanese noodles with scallops! And although some of us wanted to watch "Sweeney Todd", Szejia didn't want to so in respect of the Birthday Girl's wishes, we decided to watch a movie of her liking instead.

I never thought I would watch it, but yes, I ended up watching '27 Dresses' in honor of Szejia's birthday celebrations today. I must say it was actually quite enjoyable, undeniably cliche, but still enjoyable. Yinxia says its because me and Sara were making alot of funny comments and sound effects. Like me saying "Ooooooohhhhhh" when bad things happen (to the total silence of the theatre) and Sara laughing for absolutely no reason. Yinxia thinks its amazing, I personally think that the rest of the movie-goers must think we are pests! But ANYWAY, it was quite an entertaining movie. It had some really witty lines, and the acting was quite good. Thought the storyline was most predictable: Sara had the whole formula out halfway through the show, which was absolutely hilarious.

The start of the CNY break! I have a total of 8 days without school! HOW COOL IS THAT! Of course, I have to start studying then of course... but still. Pretty pretty happy baby!

How Far We've Come

DAMN THE VIDEO'S GOOD. I love the way they used all the footages of important historical events and people... it really puts perspective to the whole evolution of modern society and the screwed up journey mankind has so far embarked upon. And the last few images of Hilary and Obama - there's no knowing what the future holds if either wins the US presidency. Again, this begs the question of where we are all headed to: the depths of inferno and hell, or even greater heights. This song is most defintiely going to be my theme for 2008.

"I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well, I guess
We're gonna find out
Let's see how far we've come

I believe its all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess
We're gonna pretend
Let's see how far we've come"

- "How Far We've Come", Matchbox Twenty

Fantastic NEW song by Matchbox Twenty! I love Matchbox Twenty, so any new album by them, even if its a greatest hits album, is good news to me.
Just so happens the lyrics sorta fit the fact that its a new year right now. Okay, maybe they are a tab bit apocalyptic, but if you don't read it literally, you'll see that its actually really about taking stock of what we've done so far. And that's exactly what you do every time a new year comes.

I just woke up from staying up all night. 2008 has so far, been pretty much surreal.
The last few hours of 2007, and the first few hours of 2008, was spent facing old demons, exploring new possibilities, reliving old memories and embracing new beginnings.

Ironically, one of the last things I did for 2007 was watch a rather depressing film about the end of the world. It wasn't the best film to watch on new year's eve, because it makes you fatalistic and wanna kill yourself because you wonder if there's ever any hope for mankind in the future. Plus 'I Am Legend' is a terrifying thriller, because of the resonating loneliness it generates. While not as gory as '28 Weeks Later', it was infinitely more terrifying because it plays with your mind. It plays on the very human fear of loneliness, it plays on human fears of being alone: one person against a whole army of flash eating zombies. A clever film that was intelligently crafted!
While the ending of the movie is a tab bit anticlimactic, the film is a good one because of its intense ability to thrill and raise the heightened sense of fear in you. The scene in the dark cellar, where we first encounter said zombies was particularly frightening. *shudder* Watch it if you love horror thrillers, or if you love Will Smith, because the star is fantastic as the conflicted military doctor hero who struggles between trying to find a cure and adapting to the emptiness of being alone. (On another hand, don't watch it if you love dogs more than you love humans!)

After watching the movie, I made my way, rather depressed and angsty, to Yisheng's house for 71's countdown get together. Played the usual drinking games, charades, mahjong, watched them play gross Indian Poker. Talked alot. And miraculously, I didn't sleep at all. Kheng Wee and I then drove the class to West Coast McDonald's for breakfast at like 5 something in the morning. After that, made my way back in the dawn, to go back to sleep til now.

2007 was a trying year, but definitely a year where I grew up by that little bit. Here's to a more fruitful (and safe!) 2008 to come! Cheers!

P.S.: A new year deserves a new blog skin. Something darker and more eerie because I've been inspired by both 'I Am Legend' and 'How Far We've Come'. Something hellish, because I believe, it all, is coming to an end. Yeah. =]

mr magorium's wonder emporium

'Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium' is a film that is not for the ordinary masses. It is an acquired taste that you either enjoy, or you don't. It is ridiculous and illogical; but in a way that makes it ridiculously fun and illogically great. While it bombed at the box office (and in the critics' mind), it is an utterly heart-warming and meaningful movie, one that is infinitely better than the last movie I had watched (the one with those blasted chipmunks).

It features a stellar cast, from the ever talented Dustin Hoffman as the infectiously eccentric Mr Magorium, to the stunning Natalie Portman as Molly Mahoney, the insecure manager/heir of the emporium; from the adorable Zach Mills as the earnest little boy Eric, who spends most of his time in the store, to the straight faced Jason Bateman (of 'Arrested Development' fame!) who is so convincing as the dour accountant/mutant Henry.
It takes a very talented cast to take something so ludicrous and turn it into something that believable, so believable that it made me delirious with delight.
Kudos to 9 year old Zach Mills, who reminds me so much of my youngest male cousin currently in the USA, not just in his eccentric mannerism, but in looks as well. I felt so proud watching him, because he made me think of that intelligent, quirky little boy in the US, whom I am very proud of and whom I dote upon. It gave the movie an added sense of realism and closeness, which was something sorely lacking in my life for the past month of so.

Critics have deadpanned the movie's script and storyline, calling it 'inert and self-doubting'. I think, while far from perfect, it is a story that has an amazing child-like heart.
It is a film with a message, a message that resonates with anyone struggling to rediscover their place in this world, anyone trying to reassert their worth and anyone who struggles to believe.
It reminds us of the need to believe in oneself, to believe in others, to believe in the power of imagination. Very often, in life, we worry about too much and forget that we, as human beings, as individuals, are gifted with the ability to do amazing things! We have the means to overcome lots of hurdles, lots of challenges.
But because of our sterile and hectic lives, we lose than little bit of child-like heart in all of us, and we forget that the gifts we had since young; of believing in the impossible, of not being afraid to try to do the impossible, of the delights of imagination, of the powers of creativity, are very often the very tools we need to survive in our very modern lives.

In the words of Mr Magorium himself, 'Your life is an occasion, rise to it.'
Very often we worry about the most insignificant things. For example, that clinicals will be tough, that the road ahead can only get tougher, that I have to mug my pants off until my ass explodes before I can even pass, much less become a good doctor.
But the truth is, all of these worries are all unfounded, because they are founded upon the beliefs and impressions of others.
What others go through, will be what you go through, ONLY if you decide to let it be. We have the powers to change our destiny, to make clinicals as easy as a breeze, to make life ahead as relaxing as a stroll in the park, to mug smart and also end up as a smart, good doctor.
Yes, it is simple to just follow the path set out by others. But the truly great ones, no they don't simply do that. They rise my friends, by simply being different.

This is a wonderful film. As magical and whimsical as can be. I loved it.

'The Dark Knight' hits the big screen in Summer 2008! My kind of movie man.
Nothing beats the Batman fighting the Joker. This is going to make this fanboy very very happy!

chipmunks!

Alvin and the Chipmunks! The movie remake of the original classic movie features a plot that's as thin as ice, acting that is probably worthy of a couple of Raspberries, and animation that's not entirely convincing.
But while totally unrealistic and totally unsophisticated, the film endears because of the adorable nature the chipmunks, in particular, that of Theodore.
Theodore is so adorable, I just can't resist the temptation to squeeze him in my hands! (It'll be an added bonus if his eyes pop out and head explodes!)
Alvin is a total pain, Simon is a bookworm, but I love bookworms, so yeah. I'll keep Simon and Theodore, but probably roast Alvin with the Christmas turkey.

If I had the time to watch only one last movie before I die, 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' is a show I will never ever consider watching. However, though my brain keeps screaming at me to tell you how horrible the show is, my heart keeps insisting that I tell you that I actually enjoyed it.
And that's the truth really. Its a film that I know is completely rubbish, but the fact remains is that I enjoyed it. I enjoyed watching three fake chipmunks singing in squeaky voices and prancing on stage.
If you want to watch a film that requires zero intelligence, watch this flick. If anything, watch it for the infectious music.

"Christmas, Christmas time is near, Time for toys and time for cheers
We're been good, but we can't last, Hurry Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop, Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand to wait, Please Christmas, don't be late

Want a plane that loops the loop, I still want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait, Please Christmas, don't be late.
We can hardly stand the wait, Please Christmas, don't be late."
- 'The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)', Alvin and the Chipmunks

Its pretty amusing that these chipmunks have gotten me into the Christmas spirit when everything else failed. My world is totally screwed.

the golden compass

'The Golden Compass' felt like a cross between the Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings movies. It attempted to be a massive epic, just like LOTR, but unfortunately, felt more similar to the slightly kiddish Harry Potter movies. In its attempt to straddle between being either type of film, it led to the film sorely lacking in both emotional gravitas (of an epic) and wide-eye wonder (of a kid film) - the unfortunate result being a film that was neither here nor there.
Nonetheless, it was still an enjoyable film to watch.

The cast was excellent. Nicole Kidman was perfect as Mrs Coulter (my favourite character from the books because she was so fascinating!), in all her icy, sinister glory. If there was anyone who had the talents to portray this conflicted character, it would be her.
Dakota Blue Richards was surprisingly good as well, contrary to what some of my friends had said of her acting based on trailer material. She played the tom-boyish Lyra with appropriate spunk! Much better than sugar coating it with icky cutesy squeakiness, which made her performance so so refreshing.
Other well casted actors (that were, unfortunately, woefully underused) included Daniel Craig as the imperious Lord Asriel, Eva Green as the bewitching witch queen, Serafina Pekkela, Freddie Highmore and Ian McKellen as the voices of Pantalaimon (Lyra's deamon) and bear King Iorek Brynison respectively and Sam Elliot as the Texan aeronaut Lee Scoresby.

The animation, well sufficiently good, was sadly, not too realistic. The special effects still looked faked - perhaps it was an attempt to make it all look fantastical, but compared to those seen in other fantasy flicks like LOTR, Narnia and Harry Potter, which managed to be BOTH fantastical and realistic, the special effects here were quite disappointing.
It made the film feel rather detached. On top of this, is the problem that the flim suffers in terms of pacing. It feels like the film has too much to tell, but can't really decide what it wants to focus on and as a results, ends up diluting the message that the original novels had.
It was just too much, too many and would have left many viewers rather flummoxed at the whole plot. Though having read the books myself, I can tell you that feeling flummoxed while attempting to appreciate 'His Dark Materials' is perfectly, utterly normal.
Oh and the ending was rather abrupt too. I felt that if they bothered to keep it as the original ending in the novels, the film would be so much better and tragic.

I read Phillip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' Trilogy when I was in J1. My first impression of the trilogy was that it was incredibly different from the epic opus that was the Lord of the Rings, the religious metaphoric works of the Chronicles of Narnia, and the more believable world of Harry Potter.
The writing style was quite unlike the legendary sweeping style used by Tolkien, or the fairy tale language employed by C.S Lewis. It was also different from the more colloquial and accessible style used by Rowling. Pullman's style was very dark and sinister and often clinical. It had the impression of being no nonsense, and very straight to the point, which made the read so unique.
Fantasy stories all have certain hidden messages in them. Here was a trilogy that attempted to link fantasy with religion and even science. It featured talk on metaphysics, on cross dimensional universes, on the concept of Sin and individual versus religious freedom. It was an incredibly complex book.
When I read in, I felt like all the fantastic elements, like flying witches, talking amoured Polar Bears, water faring gypsies, and animal manifestations of your souls were just facades of an even greater cause, because the trilogy had so much more lessons and messages to share. So if you enjoy the movie, go read the books. Its probably infinitely better.

All in all, despite its flaws, 'The Golden Compass' is still a good movie. Go watch it because there's probably no other film available right now worth watching but this.
P.S: one side effect of the film is that it makes you imagine that you have your very own deamon sitting next to you. Mine, a large giant sheep named Darmacus, is sitting next to me right now. She thinks I'm exceedingly bored for doing this, which might be true, only I refuse to admit that.

not so enchanted afterall

'Enchanted' started off interestingly, progressed hilariously and ended incredulously. While it is a funny movie for everyone to (hopefully) enjoy, I personally found it pretentious and severely unrealistic. Though admittedly, the first half of the show wasn't too bad, and a number of scenes were just hilarious, but the emergence of cliche story twists and a freaking dragon near the end just killed the movie for me. I must say that I find such illogical, overly perfect/happy endings highly distasteful. But, if such things are your kind of thing, then please, go ahead and indulge in an overdose of mind-numbing sweetness.

I must however, say that the actors were quite good in the movie. I think it takes amazing guts and (maybe not so much) skill to portray characters that are so over-the-top and quite literally, out of this world: kudos must be given to the actress, Amy Adams, who played the annoyingly innocent, cutesy Princess and the actor James Marsden who played the annoyingly stupid, himbo Prince. They were so annoying in their respective roles that it actually made them ironically, so darn good.
Though sadly, the same cannot be said about Patrick Dempsey's performance as the cynical lawyer Robert who ends up falling in love with that silly Princess - he was just a more jaded, subdued form of McDreamy, nothing special, nothing good (all in all, an uninspiring, safe performance). Half the time, I was hoping Meredith would just turn up and slap the Princess for attempting to snatch Derek away from her - and someone to pull the backdrop off and woalah! - we are instantly transported from New York city to the beloved corridors of Seattle Grace, in the midst of a Grey's Anatomy movie!

It is a matter of personal opinion, that the movie would have been moderately good if the ending wasn't so damn unrealistic. I'm just extremely miffed by the appearance of a great big ugly dragon at the end of the movie, what's more, it was one which COULDN'T fly and had plunged to its death! Seriously? A dragon that can't fly? Technically, that's not a Dragon but a Wyrm. Which explains its hideousness and utter stupidity. And don't even get me started on how fake that silly creature looked. Preposterous!

That said, the songs are infectious. I can see myself irritating people with a rousing chorus of 'I AM LOOKING FOR A TRUE LOVE'S KISSSSSSSS!'

Update @ 2000hr:
There's 'Titanic' on TV right now! And I can't believe I actually contemplated watching the movie! Oh my! First 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', and now 'Titanic'! Old movies are haunting me!

I'm going to raid my brother's room for his Titanic movie soundtrack. Anyone cares to join me in a rousing chorus of "My Heart Will Go On"?

I just thought the lyrics of this song were particularly good.
The Music Video is very thought provoking, though rather depressing. I'm a bit too lazy to find the link to put it up here, so I'm not going to do it. =)

Just some random thoughts:
1. I shouldn't have watched an episode of 'Brothers and Sisters' because I'm hooked on the series now. Which isn't good, because it means that I now have 4 television serials to follow.

2. With regards to 'Brothers and Sisters', I wished I had a huge family too. Having 4 younger siblings to bully and kick around wouldn't be so bad eh?

3. I wish I could shake off that feeling of intense exhaustion that creeps up on me everytime I start to read a set of notes.

4. I really really want my driving license badly.

5. I regret deciding not to go to the USA with my mom and brother in December, but am too proud to admit it.

6. I absolutely can't stand the idea of me having to stay in my uncle's empty HDB flat before my new house is ready. Call me pampered but I'm sorry, I just hate living in a HDB flat.

7. I want to sit down at the TCC and order my favourite Hazel Nut Frappe and just, chill.

8. I want an Ipod, a pair of good headphones, new speakers for my laptop, and a whole bunch of the latest CDs to listen to.

9. I want to fast forward to the as-of-yet-unannounced release date for Starcraft II and start playing the freaking game already.

10. I want to get good results without having to mug that hard. Hehe.

I feel like a dog trying to bite the moon. Grrrrrr.

lust.caution

Lust.Caution is the kind of film you watch when you want to stay up all night and contemplate about the true nature of human relationships.
It is a film that is sophisticated, with amazing attention to detail, flawless acting, well made, emotional and intriguing; it is also the kind of film that has a tendency to be a drag, slightly too abstract - guaranteed to give you a nasty headache, and to also turn your bright and sunny day into a gloom filled, storm cast night.

Which probably explains why I'm having a throbbing headache right now, because I've been trying to digest what I've just watched in the cinema and I don't think I can do it without blowing my brains up. Its deep, and has so many layers of subtext that it fills your mind up with too much thoughts, so much that it makes you want to puke it all out in despair.
That said, I enjoyed myself tremendously - I thought the film, though quite a lot to chew on, was enjoyable and probably one of the most intelligent films that I've watched this year. The same cannot be said of my dinner, which was wolfed down so fast that I couldn't even remember the taste of it. Grrrrr.

The film was heavily cut - the infamous sex scenes were so watered down that they don't really matter at all really. But still, while it reduces some of the emotional power of the film and acting, it doesn't hurt the progression of the already long film (though some horny bastards out there would no doubt enjoy the longer, sex filled edition!).
Although I must question the NC-16 rating here in Singapore. With the sex scenes so watered down, there really isn't much reason to put such a rating anymore. The film was rather tame and I really see no point in slapping a NC-16 rating onto such a tame film. I rather they give us the ORIGINAL cut and slap it with a M18 (or R21, but the latter will mean that I can't watch it, so M18 is much much better!), at least the rating would be warranted then.

I must say the acting of the female lead, Tang Wei is impeccable - she was so superb in her acting, and was able to convey the feelings and changes in emotions that her character undergoes so well.
From idealistic student who joins a patriotic movement, to alluring double agent trying to seduce her bait and ultimately, a hard-broken woman who betrays everything in the name of love. Fantastic.
She's like a linguist - she speaks perfect Mandarin, English, Cantonese and Shanghai-nese! Plus she is quite the looker too! I think I've fallen in love with her! Woo hoo!

Ultimately, the film is a tragic story of the hurt idealism brings; the question of where your loyalty lies - country? self? the enemy?; the complexities of human nature and emotions; the notion of trust being found, and trust being lost; the hurt betrayal brings.
As you watch this cat-and-mouse thriller unfold, you learn the price people pay for letting caution go, and for letting lust win over you. It is a painful, emotional story of a woman's loss and sacrifice. Recommended for all you fellow emo-kids out there! Go watch and wrench you heart out while being all emo over it! =p

不能说的秘密

UPDATE @ 0136h: SHIT! I WATCHED IT IN THE END! OMG! ITS SUCH A SAD SHOW!!!!!!
ARGH! WHAT A BLOODY NICE MOVIE! Just finished watching it actually and I must say it didn't turn out as cheesy or as bad as I thought it would be... still abit strange, but the film was so well made! I love the cinematography... the scenery is so picturesque.

I haven't really figured out the ending though, but I thought the love story between the characters was SO SWEET. Its not the kind that is mind-numbingly sweet, but you know, the realistic kind, they were doing things that I personally would do on a date, kinda reminded me of what I did with her back then but that's why its so realistically sweet! Oh my, I'm going through neurotic hyperdrive here!
But I'm in love with the female lead 小雨! She's not exactly pretty or beautiful, but I love the fact that she has character and that she's got style! She so eccentric and kooky! I love my girls eccentric and kooky! OMG! I WANT A GIRLFRIEND LIKE HER! WHERE DO I GET A FREAKING PIANO THAT CAN SEND ME INTO THE FUTURE/PAST TO MEET SOMEONE LIKE HER! ARGH!

SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT. NOW I CAN'T GO TO SLEEP BECAUSE I'M ALL FLUFFY AND ANGSTY INSIDE! Sigh.

Dunno why, but this song is stuck in my head right now.
Oh and thanks to Sara, I finally found out the whole SECRET behind the movie! And oh my god, it sounds so cheesy. I'm really put off from watching it... even if its going to be like free on crunchyroll.com!

Today's kinda weird. But what Gerard said is true - perfectly morose and morbid.
Grey skies in the morning, like its heralding an imminent Dementor invasion. I think I'm feeling the effects of burnt-out. I dunno, but yeah, its hard to feel happy in light of stuff and events that's been going on.

PBL tomorrow. Bleah. Work work work.
But then if it were for Prof. Loke, I wouldn't mind slogging my ass off, but our new PBL tutor's this anal-retentive person that seriously can't keep his opinions to himself and just simply won't shut up.
Which is why I finally understand how PBL can be such a pain and why so many of my friends were complaining about it in the previous year.

Oh and on another entirely different note, I experienced a prophetic dream/deja vu moment today. I should have read the signs and prepared or prevented what was coming... but at that time the dream was so ludicrous that I wouldn't have believed that it would come true.
Which is something that you'll expect someone to learn from considering that this is like his 8th time having such prophetic dreams. But oh well, I never learn.
And anyway, its so hard to decide which dream would come true and which wouldn't. Sometimes they do come true, other times, they just fall flat. So you can't blame me for not trying. At that time, the situation was deemed highly unlikely to ever happen, so I didn't really pay much attention to it in the first place.

Come to think of it, having prior knowledge about it might not have prevented the situation from happening in the first place.
I guess things happen for a reason - best to leave it be.

"there's still room for a little more..."

Today's a day where I feel like Frodo.
(Actually, everyday's a day where I feel like Frodo.)
With a whole day free from lessons, and heavy morning showers, today's a perfect day to wake up to. Lazing around at home, watching a documentary from my ROTK DVD, writing and doodling stuff in my study... I feel like Frodo in his most constructive mood.

I like the fact that Frodo writes, and Frodo leaves Middle Earth shortly after completing his book, because he finally had enough of Middle Earth and all the bitter and painful memories it brings to him.
Maybe one day I could pull off something like what he did. Achieve something and then leave everything behind and flee to some other place and live a quiet life. Maybe write some stuff, draw some stuff.
That'll be cool.

Okay. I think I've rambled long enough.

because the dark lord has returned!
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (hereby abbreviated as 'OTP') - aka the one where Harry snogs the Asian flower-pot girl, Dumbledore and Voldemort collaborate to put on a pyrotechnic spectacle and a really pudgy, squeaky bitch in pink runs the school.

There are many different versions of the poster for OTP, but I just had to use this particular one. Isn't the Dark Lord so DAMN cool? Evil characters are so interesting, they bring so much life into the show, unlike the boring old righteous good guys who always saves the day and gets the girl and blah blah blah.
Just look at Voldie and Death Eater Inc. They are the height of cool - Voldemort, Snape (Severus oh Severus! I must learn to speak with his scowl.), Bellatrix, even Lucius; all so sinister and sadistic and slimy! They kick ass! And they usually are more complex than the good people... Oh the things I would do to be evil!

ANYWAY! If you haven't noticed, I caught OTP last night, at some Medicine charity premiere screening or something.
I think the movie was okay. It wasn't as bad as the first two movies, which was all kiddish and innocent and so boring. It continued the style that was brought out in movies 3 and 4 - darker, edgier, more intense, which definitely made it more interesting, and also more in line with the way I viewed the world of Harry Potter.
Except OTP lacked something than movies 3 and 4 had. I felt it lacked I dunno, something for people to hold on to, like it lacked a heart or some sort of focus. It felt very condensed and things just happened so quickly, so suddenly, that, most of the time, you sorta get thrown off center by the rapid flow of events.
So I came out of it feeling slightly disappointed. But I couldn't really point out what went wrong, because seriously, it was quite well made. It just lacked a certain element to it, of what, I don't really know.

Of course, with regards to staying completely truthful to the book, we all know that there is no way the movie makers are able to retain every little tidbit and scrap of information that we hard core fans relish in the books.
As a hard core fan, I still get peeved when certain facts and events deviate from those found in the novel, or when certain favourite lines get cut off or passed on to another character, because every little detail counts in Harry Potter. J.K Rowling loves her details, and even the slightest throw away line in the Novel can have a huge impact on the way the series progresses.
I guess I sorta got used to the way the movie makers butcher the original text, but it still pains me to see that movie viewers who have not read the books would not truly appreciate the intricacies of the world that Rowling had created; the way every single word, phrase or line connects all 7 books together into one massive tale; the way every single plot detail hints to something that has happened, or will happened in the series.
Still, one cannot wish for everything to turn out the way they desire it to be. I guess we have to be thankful that the movie makers did not deviate too much from the novels and commit heinous crimes like making Snape a blonde or Harry a gun wielding action hero.

One major thing to nitpick - I wish the Battle at the Ministry could be more epic. They over simplified it. Over over simplified it.
Sure the visual effects were cool, and I really like the way they depicted the fighting and dueling partners, but there just isn't the sense of mystery and utmost fear and excitement you get when you read about it in the Novel.
They left out like half the rooms in the Department of Mysteries, they over simplified the threat posed by the Death Eaters - I mean, the Death Eaters didn't even really put on a serious fight! They made it seem so easy honestly, which is stupid because this is simply not the case in the Novel.
For all the weaknesses they possess, the Death Eaters are still a powerful force to be reckoned with - they are Voldemort's personal strike force, his inner circle, his SS stormtroopers so to speak. They don't get so easily defeated by a half a dozen members of the Order (let alone half a dozen kids!) Only Dumbledore can own them.

And speaking of Dumbledore... why the heck is he so weak!
His duel with Voldemort, while certainly visually stunning, was just... anti-climatic, more like a pyrotechnic show than the epic clash of the titans that I envisioned it to be. Dumbledore was made to struggle through it. Which doesn't do justice to Dumbledore.
Yes I know, he is old and stuff, but still, this is the only man that Voldemort ever feared. This is the most powerful wizard of the age. The movie made him more fragile than the way he is depicted in the book, like he was genuinely scared and worried about how things were proceeding... which is SIMPLY NOT what Dumbledore does.
Dumbledore's cool and calm under pressure, and reacts to danger with wit, humour and a kind of whimsical air about him. He infuriates his enemies, while never becoming affected himself. That's why he is so cool. But movie Dumbledore is so so weak and reminds me of some bumbling fool.

And his duel with Voldemort... I think it would have been cooler if they just stuck to the way it was described in the novel, with Dumbledore bringing the statues of the fountain to life, and Fawkes the Phoenix joining in the Battle. And the two of them apparating here and there, shooting spells at each other. Some of the ideas they used in the novel, are just so cliche, they look as if they were incorporated into the movie just to have a chance to create some major CGI effect or something.
But oh well. I just being anal about this. Doesn't really matter to anyone else but me, because I'm in love with both Voldemort and Dumbledore and their duel in the Ministry, is to me, one of the highlights of the whole series, so I'm kinda miffed that it turned out to be so tame and over simplified; completely different from what I imagined it to be.
I mean, you have two titanic enemies meeting each other after so long - you'll think they'll want to have more fun and put in more creativity and effort in trying to fry each other's guts won't you? Rather than re-using some old ideas from the 'Manual of 100 Cliche Magical Attacks' or something.

Oh I must say, Luna Lovegood's hot! Bellatrix and Umbridge are both so well played out. Severus Snape is once again, so perfectly portrayed by Alan Rickman. Sirius was wiser than I expected him to be. And there's too little scenes of Voldemort! GIVE ME MORE VOLDEMORT! ROARRRRRR!!!
Oh and the movie has so many hints of Ron and Hermione wanting to get together. I tell you, there was this scene where they were like giving each other the eye, implying that they should leave Harry alone with Cho. I bet they were like thinking that they should take the opportunity to go make out themselves! Oh those naughty, frisky, kinky little kids!

Now that movie 5 is out, I seriously can't wait for Book 7. Just 10 more days folks!
Time to go all Potty over Potter.

of cars and autobots
I woke up on the wrong side of bed today - when I opened my eyes to check the clock on my bedside table, it told me that the time was 1145.
It took me a while to register how much shit I was in, but anyway, I was in danger of missing my driving lesson at 1305.
So I woke up with a start, rushed to get washed up, have a shower, ate breakfast (which had to double up as my lunch) and went off in a frenzy to the driving centre, feeling quite happy that I would still be on time.

Unfortunately, upon entering the centre, I realised that I couldn't find my name anywhere on the list of students up for lessons today, so with a mounting sense of dread, I went to check my bookings at the internet kiosk stationed there.
It was then that I discovered that I had made a rather stupid mistake in bookings - I mixed up the date 3rd and 5th, so I ended up canceling the lesson on the 5th (which is today) and keeping the lesson on the 3rd, which was really the OPPOSITE of what I had intended to do.
So feeling slightly angry with myself, I walked out of the centre with absolutely no idea how to spend the free time I had suddenly acquired - I was quite pissed at the fact that I had just wasted 70 dollars in booking the wrong lesson.

So in the end, I decided to not waste the time I had and head down to Junction 8 to watch 'Transformers' - which was a movie I had been dying to catch! (all the rave reviews I've been getting from everyone just served to make me more hyped up about catching it.)
So yeah, I bought a ticket for the earliest show and a 'Transformers' popcorn combo to enjoy during the movie.

The movie ROCKED! I think it was such a great movie! It certainly didn't disappoint me and I think I can see why so many of my friends keep recommending it to me.
I came out of it hoping I was a Transformer as well, or hoping that I could be in Sam's shoes and you know, buy a car that turned out to be an alien robot, and get sucked into this whole saving the world business!
But anyway, it was such a good movie! I think its the best movie I've watch this blockbuster season, much better than stuffy 'Pirates' and 'Ocean's 13', much better than kiddish 'Shrek3' and much much better than utterly crappy 'Fantastic 4'. Heck, I think it was almost as good as 'Spider-man 3' which was a little too long and draggy compared to the almost non-stop action of 'Transformers'.
It had everything really - it had loads of action, superb special effects (I love the way the robots are so realisitc!), lovable characters (I love the Autobots!), lots of humour, and ultimately, a heart.
I like the way the story sorta focused on telling the story about the bond between a boy and his car - because I think its something every boy is going to have to go through when he starts buying his car. (I hope to be in that position soon, so yeah, I see lots of resonance there people!)

My favourite scenes where when all the Autobots where assembled and having team meetings and stuff like that! I get an amazing upsurge of emotion when I watch the Autobots work together or when they have those sweeping shots of the Autobots in their vehicle forms, just speeding along the highway and roads in a convoy formation!
I love the way they fight together as a team, as oppose to the Decepticons, who seem to be programmed to just go into battle and destroy whatever they see, without thinking about strategy and all that.
The Autobots however, work as a team, and you can really sense the camaraderie between the Autobots, plus the way they fight together is quite exhilarating, though I think its slightly unfair that Megatron is way over-powered and ends up really owning most of the competition.
But other than that, yeah, the Autobots are the heart of this movie... they are the undisputed stars of the show. (though credit must be given to Shia LeBouf for putting up quite an amazing performance as boy hero Sam, though in light of the size of his co-stars, there really isn't any doubt who the real stars are.)

I love Bumblebee, he's just adorable! The way he communicates with the radio is quite well done honestly! I seriously want to have my own Bumblebee, it'll be so cool to have a car as your own personal guardian.
And Ironhide's persona as a grumpy, rough and tumble man is so apt! The way he gets annoyed with the little dog and the humans, asking Optimus for permission to shoot them is just so amusing.
And Jazz, the way he hip-hops around is quite funny, like some sort of hyperactive, overgrown teenager or something. And he actually refers to the Decepticons as 'Bitches'! I wouldn't call my enemies that but I guess that's quite okay!
And Ratchet has some of the best lines - I like the line where he says that Sam's pheromone levels indicate that he wants to mate with Mikaela! I was laughing my head off when he said that line.
And Optimus Prime! WOO HOO! He is also quite funny - he tries to be serious, but some of the things that he says are just so hilarious, that it doesn't go with his serious tone of voice.

Well. As you can see, I'm now obsessed with Transformers. I came out of the theatre with a whole new level of respect for motor vehicles now.
While I was waiting at the side of the road for my mom to come pick me up for dinner, I was observing all the cars that drove by in a whole new light, and I must admit, half the time, I was hoping that the next car that drove by me would suddenly morph into an amazing, fully functional robot and start shaking hands with me and informing me that my glasses house the key to saving the world!
But of course, no car did that. I guess some things are just better left to day dreaming.

Read that two more sequels are officially being made! Can't wait for them!
And if you haven't watched it already, go catch it! I can only hope that HP5 will be half as good as this...

'Autobots, transform and roll out!'

robots in disguise

WOO HOO! Am I the only one out there who is absolutely pique about the upcoming Transformers movie? I honestly can't wait for it to hit local shores - which should be tomorrow actually.

Ignore the rather low quality of the trailer up there. It was the best I could find out of youtube. And I'm sure all of you can see that its the Japanese trailer, given the Japanese subtitles and the way the announcer proclaims the name of the movie at the end!
I love the way he announces 'Transformers'. So typical of a Japanese.

I don't think I can consider myself a Transformer fanatic/geek, but I do know that I am a fan of it. I never did manage to collect any old toys or merchandise, but I remember watching the cartoons and even the cartoon movie that was made when I was young, and becoming sorta obsessed with names like Optimus Prime, Rodimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, Bumblebee, and the Dinobots! I loved the Dinobots!
Come to think of it, my favourite character was always Rodimus Prime, which to the uninitiated, is the successor of Optimus Prime after the latter got shut down or something. But anyway, Rodimus isn't in the upcoming movie because Optimus is still around. (Okay, somehow, the whole chunk up there sorta indicate that I was a Transformer geek, but I assure you, I'm not that big a Transformer geek... I'm more of a Starwars and LOTR and HP geek!)

The series has really come a long way now... from the blocky animation to the high tech wizardry we see today. The TV spots and trailers look great.
I like the fact that the robots actually look realistic, although there were lots of controversy over the updating of the robots like Bumblebee becoming a Camaro instead of a Volkswagen beetle, Megatron no longer becoming a giant cannon etc.
I think its okay as long as they don't deviate too much from the original personalities of the characters. It'll be like the famous 'make Snape a blonde' or 'Arwen a kick ass super heroine' examples, no one would buy it. So as long as the robots have personalities similar to their original forms, I'm absolutely okay with them being spiffed and spiced up for the movie.

"Whoever finds this, my car is ALIVE!"
You have no idea kid, no idea at all.

Oh yeah, I read in today's newspaper that the whole cast of 'Heroes' is coming to Singapore for some world tour!
Can you imagine that? The likes of Peter, Claire, Hiro and Sylar all walking around looking at the Merlion and the Esplanade? How cool is that!
