Okay, I decided to post this picture because of the little nice old lady who took me for pathology tutorial today. She totally reminded me of the other little nice old lady in the picture, whom I met in Europe. She was our tour guide around the Roman Ruins in Rome and I totally went gaga over her (the rest can testify to that!) Our tutor today, whom I think is Prof. Ivy Seah, was just like her, so nice and knowledgeable. Joanne and I were totally blown away by her amazing grandmotherly-ness!
I've got to admit that I've this rather strange liking of grandmothers. I wouldn't call it a fetish (eek!) but I think its a sort of gravitation towards having a matriarchal figure in life. I love my own grandmothers, and one of my many regrets in life is that I wasn't closer to my paternal grandmother before she passed away almost 9 years ago. But right now, I'm glad that I'm quite close to my maternal grandmother and that she's relatively healthy and happy. Granted that she has diabetes which is a chronic condition that's notoriously hard to control, but hey, at least she's relatively ambulatory.
I think grandmother figures are just amazing. There's something startling beautiful about them, the way they carry the weight of their experiences on their shoulders, their greyish-white hair being sort of a badge of honour, the way their smiles always reveal wisdom, benevolence and maternal warmth. I find it absurd that my female peers are so adverse to aging these days: I mean, growing old doesn't necessarily mean that you lose your beauty and the best years of your prime, in fact, growing old can be a beautiful thing, and when you find the right balance to age gracefully, you'll become someone so beautiful that even those anorexic super models can't even compare with.

| christmas weekend |
On the 23rd of December, my Christmas weekend started with a field trip to the National History Museum with 04s71 & our GP/CT tutor Mr Augustine Wong. It was the first time the class ever had an outing with Mr Wong, which was an interesting experience, but nonetheless, it was an enjoyable one. We first went to Olio Dome Cafe at the Singapore Art Museum to chill and wait for everyone to assemble, then we headed off to the History Museum to catch the exhibit of Greek artifacts from the Lourve currently on display there. Then we braved the rain to travel to Village at Heren for dinner. All in all, it was probably the most successful class outing ever, with over 16 people turning up for the museum trip or dinner. It was most certainly the highlight of my christmas weekend!

On the 24th, I spent the day doing last minute christmas shopping and wrapping. Dinner was spent at Sebastian's house, and after that, I sent Alex home. It was great fun chatting with him while driving. And I love sending people home. Gives me time to talk to them.
On the 25th, I went to my Aunt's place for a Christmas gathering. Haven't seen the whole extended family for a long time, and everyone kept going on about how I became so thin. I don't think its that much of a big deal, since I've always been so thin. But anyway, it was nice seeing them, got a few presents here and there. Stayed from lunch to dinner, and then went home to enjoy some computer gaming.
On the 26th, went to watch Mr Magorium's Magical Emporium at AMK hub. Nice film, for more details, read my entry dated 26/12/07.

| this entry's long overdue |
Okay, it really is a test of your patience for one to mug his/her set of COFM notes. Its hard to concentrate on what your are reading when everything that you read just makes that little voice in your head go 'Tut tut tut!' or 'Erh, DUH!' or even worse 'WTF was that whole paragraph about?'.
So I decided to take a long break from COFM tonight and started scrolling through photographs. I think its high time I posted some of my favourite photos from my Europe trip. This entry's long overdue, so its time I paid my dues!
Our first group photo of the trip - at the Eiffel Tower! There are many other nice group photos but I think this was the most significant because it was the first and we were quite high over seeing the Eiffel Tower, which was the first major landmark that we saw on the whole trip.
I went to Monaco, and I bought a car. And its a Rolls-Royce at that. =]
Xiuzhen and me at a Beer Hall in Munich, on what was incidentally, my birthday! Judging by the dazed/glassy look on my face, I was most probably tipsy then. Which isn't surprising since I've always been quite weak with alcohol! =p

I love this photo too! I dunno why, but it makes me look damn cool. The statue at the back's supposed to be the founder of the Natural History Museum or something. Can't exactly remember the details though, it was like 4 odd months ago.
A photo of me with the person who is the closest equivalent of a sister to me - my cousin Astee, who is studying in London right now. Needless to say, I am awfully jealous of her. =/ (and after this photo, I'm forced to admit - we do look alike!)

| solidarity of spirit & sincerity of friendship |
HCJC MAF '07 was held on the 15th of September. It was a night filled with the same old feelings of nostalgia. I sorta think MAF is just one big excuse for HC alumnus to just keep reminiscing of the good old times that are now long gone. HC is the only JC institution that has such an event, which strengthens the whole image of everyone of us being part of this huge family. But its good! Good excuse to just temporarily forget about the present and to live in the past.
(just make sure you don't get stuck living in the past for too long. =p)
I miss 71. I really do. My favourite photo is that of the label on my classbench - they haven't changed it yet! It's as if 04s71's spirit still lives on in that wooden bench that we were so proud to call ours. Sigh.
I think I speak for all 71-ians out there when I say that our CT, Mr Wong totally made our day when he sent us a SMS that night. Here's the message; its too hilarious to NOT post it here:
"It was really nice seeing so many members of the class today. What I shall remember most about 71 is the solidarity of spirit shown and the sincerity of friendship shared. What impresses me too is the admirable humility of so many of you who are indisputably high achievers on your own terms. Wanted to catch up with all of you on a one-to-one basis, but think we were somewhat pressed for time today.. We'll meet again end of the year outside of college. Should be a nice change. Can meet for dinner at say, Marche or something."
Its such a typical Mr Wong kind of message. I was laughing my hearts out when I was reading it out to a few of the girls whom I was having supper with. But even though we thought it was funny, I guess we all felt that it was also darn true. All Mr Wong did was just use his awesome command of English and express what all of us couldn't. What he was describing was just that bond that my class had. It was a unique bond, and one that I can PROUDLY say NO OTHER CLASS in HCJC HAD. We were mad when we wanted to be mad, we were hard-working when we had to be hard-working; we had loads of fun all the time, but at the end of the day, we made sure all of us produced the results that was needed. And most importantly, we tried to do everything without anyone being left behind. It was a great class to be in, filled with genuine, good-natured, good-hearted people and I love everyone of them for being that just.
Geraldine and I are trying to get all 71-ians to change their MSN personal messages to "solidarity of spirit shown and the sincerity of friendship shared." That'll be so darn cool.

Hoho! Its ALL OVER!
Currently very tired right now, even though I've been taking long naps since 2.
Woke up at 5 and realized with a thrill of horror that I left my shoe bag and shoes in the hotel! Don't know if anyone saw it or anything, but PLEASE return it to me! Thanks!
ANYWAY - that's a photo of the DnD committee taken right after DnD itself. I think we are all VERY happy that the whole thing's just over. I must say I had a fun time working with all the wonderful people - tiring, yes, but ulitmately fun!
It was a whirlwind of emotions and stress but ultimately, we somehow managed to pull it off. Things proceeded the best way it could possibly have proceeded. At least there weren't like, horrific accidents and hiccups. The crowd this year was out of control and that added an element of chaos to the whole proceedings that made it quite terrifying.
But I am glad its all over, and now we can all continue on with our normal lives and not worry too much about other matters except probably like passing our tests and mugging.
Photos will be posted up later, when I manage to really sort them out.
Think I might do a collage or something, I dunno... so many photos, it'll be so unfair to just post up photos of some and not others.
I feel like retiring to bed right now, but I'm getting paranoid about PBL on tuesday!

Okay, I don't have much time to blog now, because my brother is gonna pick me up soon - we're going to my primary school teacher's house to visit her before she delivers in approximately 2 weeks time.
Haven't seen her for ages - think its going to be very very awkward (argh). I just hope I don't die from the awkwardness or something. But then I think my throat's gonna kill me first so I don't think it seriously matters.
Anyway, had econs 's' outing with my econs 's' clique (sans Suan who's in China right now!) on Thursday (26/06/07)
Ailin and Huilin are both back, so Weishu organised a get together to celebrate Ailin's belated birthday. Went to Suntec to eat Xiao Long Baos because the girls are sick of Western food, having been studying in Western countries for the past 9 months or so.
After that went to TCC to drink coffee and chit chat and catch up. Brought back lots and lots of memories of the numerous econs 's' lessons, where we did nothing but talk cock because we didn't bother to listen to what the teacher was talking about, or because we just didn't understand what was being taught.
Plus all the numerous outings as well, where on the surface it was supposed to be some discussion meeting for our projects etc, but ended up being a talk cock session or something like that.
And the way the girls always bully me and Weishu - either asking me to treat them to ice cream or asking Weishu to do utterly stupid stuff. The sad thing was the two of us usually do as they commanded us to do... which is quite pathetic really.
Oh and the fact that we like to make fun of various members of the Hwa Chong Economics Department! Always a favourite hobby of mine. =p
Everyone from 04s71 seems to be so damn busy, even though its like the holiday season. Its seriously hard to organise a class outing with a respectable attendance right now.
Will try to organise one seriously big get together before the holidays end, when I am certain that everyone is back from their various overseas trips/attachments/CIPs and stuff. National Day looks good though... shall plan it out.Labels: flashback, friends, photos |

| birthdays |
Two of my friends - Kai Liang and Wilson, turned 20 on 21st June.
So happy birthday to both you guys!
Anyway, I think Kai Liang's abroad, so all I did was send him an SMS greeting. Hope he received it.
As for Wilson, I met up with my 2 Sig BN buddies in the evening to celebrate Mr Bear-Bear's birthday. So after my afternoon spent with Lileng and Suan, I went to meet the guys at Dohby Gaut in the evening for dinner at Manhattan Fish Market.

I didn't take much photos, cause *cough* erm, I forgot to charge my batteries after returning from Europe. Yeah yeah, I know, its been what, at least a week since I've been back but I'm such a lazy procrastinator, so much so that I just couldn't bring myself to find my charger and recharge the batteries.
In my defence, I did switch batteries before leaving home, just that I forgot the minor fact that both of my batteries were actually flat, so switching them didn't make much of a difference.
Anyway, we bought Wilson a small little Powerpuff Girls cake. I think he really loved it.
After dinner we decided to go walk around. The initial plan was to get Wilson drunk (my army friends are such typical army boys. Tsk tsk!) but as we finished dinner at a rather early time of 1930, we realised that there wasn't any place open that early to get someone drunk.
We checked the theatres to see if we could find anything worth watching, but the timings weren't good so we scrapped the whole idea of watching a movie as well.
So in the end, we decided to play pool. It was quite funny cause as usual, my amazing lack of skill in pool resurfaced again. I'm really bad at pool, because of several reasons:
1. I can't seem to choose the right ball to target. I have this apparent lack of common sense in choosing balls to hit, so much so that my friends will help me point out really obvious targets and I'll think to myself 'That was pretty obvious. Why didn't I notice that before?!?'
2. I have this amazing ability to hit the white ball such that it jumps, leapfrogging the ball I'm supposed to hit before coming back to earth and hitting some other ball that definitely wasn't my initial target. Apparently my friends think its some sort of skill - I say its just because I'm really crap at pool.
3. I am horribly attracted to the black No.8 ball. Somehow or another, I always end up committing suicide - my aim will go awry and I'll end up hitting another ball into the slots. Unfortunately, that ball always happens to be the black no.8, thus bringing my desperate attempts at staying alive to a premature end.
4. I don't really have an understanding of the physics behind the game. I know that there's lots of physics undertones in pool, with angles and forces and calculations and hit-here-and-the-ball-will-end-up-there logic. Unfortunately, I am a complete fool at physics. (some can argue that I have very little patience for common sense or logic as well) As such, I find it hard to visualize all the tips or points that my friends are trying to make. All I can think of when I play pool is to hit any ball - even if its not one that I'm supposed to hit (muahahaha!).
After pool (where I had quite a good time laughing and marveling at my amazing lack of skill in the game) we went to TCC for a little bit of caffeine and good old chit-chatting. The guys are ORD-ing in 4 to 5 months time. We discussed quite alot of plans to meet up in NUS in the coming year, cause quite a number of us are studying there.
I'm actually going to be 2 years their senior when they enter the University, how weird is that? But oh well, we were saying that we should meet up in NUS, and I'll end up turning up in office year cause I'll be in clinicals by then. In fact, it'll probably be a miracle if I even managed to find time to turn up, especially if I end up getting posted at some other hospital other than NUH.
But oh well. Sounds fun. It'll be cool to meet other guys of our age walking around NUS.
In the end, we never got down to getting Wilson drunk. Our dear old Cinderello, Vincent was harping to get home by 12 so we decided to call it a day after TCC.
Vinnie was nice enough to send me home since we live so close to each other - he received his civilian license after getting back from Taiwan. He dropped Kaiming at a bus stop on the way back and after that it was a nice smooth drive back to my estate.
I must say, its nice to have a friend who lives near you and who has a license, so so convenient.
Still, can't wait to get my own. Hope I pass the 1st time round though. I think I'll get quite sianified if I failed the first time round and would probably end up procrastinating for some time before I actually attempt the test again.Labels: festive, friends, list, photos |

| we are going to the zoo zoo zoo! |
04s71 went to the zoo today. Or rather 6 members of 04s71 went to the zoo today. It was kinda sad that an outing with an expected turn out of 11 ended up just being an outing of 6. But its so typical of 71. What can we say, we sorta expected it. Haha.
So in the end it was just the 6 of us: Gilyn, Shinwei, Khengwee, Yisheng, Anthony and me.
I love the zoo. Ever since I was a child, the zoo was the one and only place that I loved to visit. It definitely has to do with the fact that I love animals, and in fact, I still do. I'd always said that if I didn't get accepted into Medical School, I most likely would have gone overseas to read veterinary science, and come back to be a vet or something. And working in the zoo, or volunteering there for the matter, has always been somewhat of a dream of mine. And unfortunately, its been a dream I have yet to have fulfilled. So maybe, one day, when everything is right, I will actually get to work or volunteer there. We'll see.
I just have to mention about this particular sheep. He has a serious case of an indirect hernia. I am serious. I was so so traumatized and worried for this sheep that I became quite distraught and obsessed with trying to determine what was wrong with him. You can ask the rest of them. Plus he was a sheep, one of my kind, and it pains me to see one of my kind in such trouble.
Really felt the sheep's pain. I mean, it had horribly horribly stretched testicles, so stretched that it was touching the floor. It was so painful to even watch him walk around the enclosure. I hope the vets treat him or something, and put him out of his misery. Poor dude.

Shinwei asked me to pull the nose of the statue of the Probiscus Monkey and take a photo with it. So here it is. We did a lot of stupid things really.
The girls were debating which animals they liked based on their faces - whether they had evil faces or kind faces - which I think is a very strange way to explain why you like a certain animal.
And we kept pretending we were intellects who knew all about the animals, spurting out random facts about the animals, when the truth is that we were just merely reciting the information on the boards at the enclosures. Once, some of us even started jumping to try to get some goat like creature to jump with us.
Oh and when Gilyn started singing 'When you're happy and you know it, wag your tail!' Shinwei and I actually went 'Wag wag!' And the four of them were quite amazed that 2 medical students could be so childish as to sing along. I think we were both quite amazed too. Haha!
Oh the Baboons are amazing. The Singapore Zoo's Baboon exhibit is a very very fantastic example of how landscaping plays an important part in making the enclosure so much more realistic.
It was amazing to watch the Baboons running around, living lives so startling similar to our own. Its like watching a soap opera. Always a hoot.
This king cobra was apparently attracted to me. It slithered all the way across the enclosure, right to the corner where I stood. And when I moved away, it slithered away. The rest say its because it wants to bite me. I say its because it knows that I'm Lord Voldemort and thus am able to communicate with snakes. So it slithered across the room to pay homage to its great master. Hehe.

I had fun in the zoo today. But then I always have fun in the zoo. Haha. Its an annual sorta thing, go there almost once every year. I think I will never get sick of it, seeing the animals, listening to them, makes me happy. I dunno why. Maybe its telling that I feel so much happier around animals compared to being around humans.
